Updates on imprisoned teachers in Iran – as of September 30, 2015

Mohammad Reza Niknejad, a board member, and Mehdi Bohlooli, a member, of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association, were released on a three hundred million toman bail on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. The two teachers were arrested on August 31, 2015 following a ruling by the branch 2 of the   Evin prison Court. Charges against these union activists included attending teachers’ gatherings during the year.

Also, Mr. Milad Darwsih was released on bail on September 27, 2015. He is charged with propaganda against the system and acting against national security.

The above education activists will have to face trials in near future.

With the start of the school year, educators across the country have been calling for the release of all detained teachers.

Mr. Mahmoud Beheshti Langroodi, a board member of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association (ITTA-Tehran), who was arrested by security forces at his home on September 6, 2015, is still in custody. Mr. Esmail Abdi, General Secretary of the ITTA-Tehran, as well as a number of other prominent teachers including Rasoul Bodaghi, Ali Akbar Baghani, Alireza Hashemi and Abolreza Ghanbari continue to be in prison.  Mr. Bodaghi has now been given an additional three year jail sentences despite finishing his six-year prison term.

Re: Stop persecution of teachers and education activists in Iran

I am writing this to protest against continued intimidation, arrests and prosecution of teachers in Iran.

Mr. Mahmoud Beheshti Langroodi, a board member of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association (ITTA-Tehran), who was arrested by security forces at his home on September 6, 2015, is still in custody. Mr. Esmail Abdi, General Secretary of the ITTA-Tehran, as well as a number of other prominent teachers including Rasoul Bodaghi, Ali Akbar Baghani, Alireza Hashemi and Abolreza Ghanbari continue to be in prison.  Mr. Bodaghi has now been given an additional three year jail sentences despite finishing his six-year prison term.

These waves of arrests and persecution of teachers and education activists in Iran must stop. I call on your government to free all imprisoned teachers in Iran and to put an end to persecution of teachers and education activists in the country.
