Seminar: The New Brazil
Friday and Saturday June 6th and 7th 2003
, at UQAM

UQAM
, J.-A.-DeSève Building (320, Sainte-Catherine East),  Room DS-R510

Alternatives, in collaboration with the Fundação Perseu Abramo from Brazil, invites you to a seminar on the New Brazil.  This important event will bring together the main actors of the new Brazilian government, in particular:

Miguel Rossetto, Agrarian Development Minister
Marco Aurelio Garcia, President Lula’s International Policy Counsellor
Representative,
Brazil Environment Ministry
Paolo Vannuchi,
President of the Ciudadania Institute
Graciano, Food Security Minister, director of the national campaign against hunger

Ricardo de Azevedo
, Fundação Perseo Abramo Representative

This is a unique opportunity to meet key Brazilian representatives and to deepen your knowledge about the issues stemming from the new political context in Brazil.

Last November more than 60% of Brazilians voted for political change and in favour of social justice, democracy and active citizen participation in government.  During his inauguration last January, President Ignacio Lula Da Silva, clearly indicated his government’s priorities: struggle against hunger and exclusion, administrative reforms, agrarian reform and review of the country’s international policy.  This ambitious project faces a number of obstacles, including Brazil’s economic instability and social polarisation, as well as a rarefied global political climate.  Join us to discover how Brazil, with its 178 million people and varied political, economic and social assets, is up to the task.
