On the early morning of Wednesday 9th of November 2016, Mr. Esmail Abdi, the General Secretary of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association (Tehran) was arrested at his home and was taken to Evin prison.
Six individuals (without official police uniform and identification) who introduced themselves as Evin Law Enforcement but refused to provide any evidence approached his home and in front of his wife and three children forced him into a car parked outside the house and took Abdi to Evin prison. Since then his wife, family and his solicitor have not been able to contact him.
This update is issued after receiving information that Mr. Esmail Adi is concentrated to serve his six year prison term and that it does not seem the authorities have any intentions to release him. However, pressures by concerned organizations in Iran and internationally could certainly help secure his release.
More updates to come.

Freedom for Iranian teacher union leader Esmail Abdi
[Name of your organisation] condemns the six-year jail sentence imposed on Mr. Esmail Abdi, a leader of the Tehran Teacher Trade Association. The sentence was announced on 7 October by Branch 36 of the Appeal Court of Tehran.
The charges, including one for “assembling and colluding against national security”, are unjust and contravene various Human Rights Conventions, including those protecting freedom of expression and association, as well as the right of unions to be consulted on education policies.
This latest re-sentencing comes at a time when the current regime’s policies have resulted in a crisis in the country’s educational system and impacted on teachers’ living conditions. The authorities are attempting to silence teachers’ grievances through repression and the extended incarceration of unionists and activists.
[Name of your organisation] requests that the unfounded charges against Mr. Abdi be dropped and that his conviction is reversed.
