UNITE HERE calls for strict measures to protect workers and guests as U.S. casinos set to reopen

As casinos across the U.S. closed since March prepare to reopen, the IUF-affiliated UNITE HERE is calling for strict measures to protect workers, guests and public health. “Hundreds of thousands of workers are employed in the gaming industry in the United States”, says union President D. Taylor, “and it is imperative that any plan made to reopen these facilities involves input from both workers and their union. We want to go back to work but we want to go back to work in a safe environment where we’re not viewed as rats in a lab – like some politicians are trying to put us in.” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman had suggested that Las Vegas could be a ‘control group’ to test the impact on residents of lifting restrictions.

The union’s detailed policy guidelines include measures to help ensure prevention, protection, enhanced cleaning/disinfecting and implementation and enforcement including joint labour-management oversight.
