Iran: unions demand transparent investigation into plane crash

Education unions call for a clarification of the circumstances that led to the crash of Ukraine International Flight 752 outside Tehran, which claimed 176 victims, including professors and students.

Through a statement on its website, the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), a member of Education International, has expressed its condolences to the relatives and friends of the victims of the air crash which took place on the 8th of January.

Edmontonian Mojgan Daneshmand and her husband Pedram Mousavi, both engineering faculty members at the University of Alberta, and their two daughters were among the 63 Canadians who lost their lives on the flight.

Other Canadians on the flight were from British Columbia, Quebec, and Ontario. According to CAUT, the University of Ottawa has confirmed that three of its students were aboard the Ukraine International Airlines flight, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Iran’s capital of Tehran on its way to Kyiv.

David Edwards, Education International General Secretary, expressed his heartfelt condolences and stated: “This is a terrible loss for hundreds of familiesWe mourn for our colleagues, our students and all those whose lives were cut tragically short. We demand a transparent international investigation into the troubling circumstances that led to the plane crash.
