Reza Shahabi released; Hassan Saeidi, Seyed Rasoul Taleb Moghadam & four others still incarcerated

May 7, 2019: Over 45 people were arrested on May 1st, 2019 in Tehran (in front of Majles, Iranian parliament) after a violent attack by security and intelligent forces on a peaceful rally. The rally was called by the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company to commemorate the International Workers’ Day and was supported by other labour, student and women’s rights groups. Over 10 women were among the arrestees.

As of Tuesday, May 7th, there are reportedly still 6 people in detention including two members of the bus workers’ syndicate, Hassan Saeidi and Seyed Rasoul Taleb Moghadam. Reza Shahabi was released on bail with a surety on May 7th, while other members of our Syndicate, Vahid Fereydouni, Naser Moharamzadeh and Mohammad Ali Aslaghi, have also been released within the last few days on bail.  Hassan Saeidi and Seyed Rasoul Taleb Moghadam are detained in section 209 of Evin Prison.

The Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company wholeheartedly thank all support and solidarity efforts in Iran and internationally within the last few days. We are calling on our allies in the international labour movement to continue demanding that the Iranian government to unconditionally release all detainees and to stop persecution and prosecution of workers for exercising their most basic and internationally recognized workers’ rights.
