Latest Updates: Salehi’s Dangerous Health Conditions

Mr. Sharif, the lawyer of Mahmoud Salehi, could not meet his client.

June 20, 2007- Najibeh Salehzadeh, Mahmoud’s spouse, and Mohammad Abdipour, one of the Saqez 7 labour activists, have reported that Mahmoud was transferred to Tohid Hospital in Sanandaj under heavy security on Sunday, June 17th and after medical examinations he was sent back to the prison again. Salehzadeh reports that in her last visit Mahmoud seemed very sick and his face, hands and stomach were swelling.

On Tuesday, June 19, 2007, Mahmoud Salehi, during a phone conversation with his wife, announced that the authorities prevented a meeting with his lawyer.

Furthermore, in the same day, in an interview by the Committee in Defense of Mahmoud Salehi in Iran with Mr. Sharif, he reported that the judicial authorities did not authorize his visit. They told him that the verdict for Salehi is final and that his lawyer can no longer intervene in the case. Dr. Sharif argues that in several cases, like the parole, the emergency leave, medical treatments, and so on the lawyer has right to intervene. Mr. Sharif adds that when he had the file of Mr. Naser Zarafshan, who had a 5 years imprisonment in Evin prison, he was in contact with Zarafshan until the last day. Nevertheless, the deputy prosecutor of Sanandaj prevented him from meeting Mr Salehi today and told Sharif that he has no rights to see Salehi and that was a mistake (by the Evin authorities) to let him visit Zarafshan while he had been imprisoned.

According to Mr. Sharif, the kidney specialist and the doctors of the prison had already certified that Mahmoud Salehi should be treated immediately. Mr. Sharif has written letters to the prosecutor of Saqez and other legal authorities in Saqez and Sanandaj concerning Salehi’s dangerous state of health and recalled them that the authorities of prison are entirely responsible for this situation. In addition to problem of kidney, and as the result of the lack of treatment, Mahmoud Salehi now suffers from the heart problem as well as stomach and intestinal problems.  He has been weakened severely that he cannot stand on his feet. Mr. Sharif adds that in situations like this the doctors without borders should intervene.
