Salehi is facing a life-threatening situation!
Madadi Freed Without any Conditions!
July 5, 2007- There are various campaigns in Iran for the immediate release of Mahmoud Salehi, one of the founding members of the Bakery Workers Association of Saqez and a prominent labour activist in Iran. The Committee in Defense of the May Day Arrested Workers in Iran has called on a renewed urgent action for the immediate transfer of Salehi to a specialized hospital for urgent treatment. The Committee has given a warning to all concerned organizations and individuals in Iran and abroad about Salehi’s life threatening situation. There are reports that the Sanandaj’s authorities are preventing the transfer of Salehi to a hospital purposefully to completely weaken his health. The Committee has called on all concerned individuals and organizations as well as Doctors without Borders to intervene to save Salehi’s life before it’s too late.
July 5, 2007- Ebrahim Madadi, the Vice-president of the board of directors of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, was freed without any conditions on July 4, 2007 following spending one day in detention. According to the reporter of the Syndicate, Mr. Madadi was taken to the branch 12 of Tehran justice department for a hearing, during which he questioned the investigator why they arrested him in the office of the labour department without any previous summons. Madadi was told that the chief of the police station number 127 has confirmed that a summons had been sent to Madadi’s home; however, Mr. Madadi has never received such summons.
Many union members and supporters were present at the justice department in support of Madadi. Madadi and the Syndicate have complained about the arrest and the violation of their legal rights. Following his release, Madadi along with other members of the Syndicate, went to the office of Tehran’s labour department to inquire about the final decision of the dispute board on the cases of about 40 suspended union members (employees of the Vahed Bus Company). After 70 days following the completion of the investigations and hearings, no decisions have yet been announced about the fate of these workers. Workers vowed they will be back to the labour department by July 8th.
In June, Madadi had been beaten by Abbas Mohammadi, a deputy director of Tehran Province labour department, and several members of the security department of the Ministry of labour during one of his visits to the office of the ministry. Madadi had filed a complaint against Mohammadi prior to his arrest on July 3rd and the complaint has been in process.
