Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for Shahrokh Zamani’s life

IASWI is holding the Islamic Republic of Iran responsible for Mr. Zamani’s health and well-being. We’re also asking all labor unions, progressive organizations and parties, human rights’ institutions and individual activists to support Mr. Shahrokh Zamani and all other imprisoned workers and political prisoners in Iran, and demand immediate and unconditional release for all incarcerated workers and political prisoners in Iran.

April 5, 2014 – Mr. Shahrokh Zamani, a member of the Founding Board of the Syndicate of Paint Workers of Tehran and the Committee to Pursue the Establishment of Workers Organizations has been on hunger strike since March 8, 2014. His health is in great jeopardy. According to reports he is currently incarcerated at Ghezel Hesar prison in the city of Karaj.

Originally back on 8 of March 2014, Shahrokh Zamani and some cell mates were on a solidarity hunger strike in support of other striking political prisoners at the Gohar Dasht prison. Three days into the hunger strike Gohar Dasht prison management decides on a sudden transfer of Shahrokh Zamani to Ghezel Hesar prison with no explanation or justification. In protest, Shahrokh Zamani continued his hunger strike. He has spent eight days in solitary confinement since his transfer to Ghezel Hesar prison. At times they have had to put him on syringe, so far he has lost seventeen kilos of his body weight.

Shahrokh Zamani was originally arrested with Mr. Mohamad Jarahi in June of 2011. In a subsequent sham trial, the Branch 1 of the Tabriz Islamic Revolutionary Court sentenced Shahrokh Zamani to 11 years and Mohammad Jarahi to five years imprisonment after conviction of charges including “acting against national security by establishing or membership of groups opposed to the system” and “spreading propaganda against the establishment”. Since mid-2012 he has been transferred to Gohar Dasht prison to carry out this inhumane jail sentence.
