International union solidarity with independent unions and the democracy movement in Hong Kong

Representatives of the ITUC and all the Global Union Federations based in the Geneva region  marched to the Geneva Permanent Mission of the Government of China on August 30 in response to the IUF call to show solidarity with the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and the millions of people demanding democracy in Hong Kong.

The global unions delivered a letter to the Ambassador calling on  China to withdraw its troops from the vicinity and  the Hong Kong administration to immediately enter into dialogue with the democracy movement.

The global unions support the HKCTU call for permanent withdraw of the extradition law and the release of the arrested prisoners without charge, withdrawal of the administration’s characterization of the protests as ‘riots’, an independent investigation into police violence and abuse of power, and the implementation of universal suffrage.

The IUF and its sister organizations are particularly concerned about the growing victimization of workers by employers for their participation in or support for the protests and demand their immediate reinstatement.
