Farewell to a great trade unionist and advocate of development cooperation

It is with great sadness that the global education trade union community has learned of the passing on 6 July of Emmanuel Fatoma, a former Education International senior coordinator for Africa.

Of Sierra Leonese origin, and leading member of Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU), “Emmanuel will be remembered by many as a doyen of trade unionism in Africa and the world, an inspirator and a legend in trade union development,” stressed Education International’s General Secretary, David Edwards.

He added: “To many others, Emmanuel will also stay as a close friend who never failed to support and assist whenever needed. At the same time, debating with him was a warmhearted constructive intellectual challenge.”

Education International’s thoughts are with his wife and children. He will be greatly missed.
