An appeal for retrial of Esmail Abdi has been rejected!

Email Abdi photo in classroomThe appeal for retrial of Esmail Abdi, a member of the board of directors of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association, was rejected in February 2017 by Branch 33 of the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Samaneh Asadkhani, Abdi’s lawyer, reported to the Iranian media, on February 4, 2017, that they had requested a judicial review and retrial of Abdi after their original appeal for annulment of one of the sentences against him, which was five years imprisonment, had been rejected by Branch 36 of the Appeals Court. However, Branch 33 of the Supreme Court in City of Qom, also rejected their request. According to labour activists in Iran this branch of Supreme Court especially has the mission to halt the legal proceeding and judicial of the labour and political cases, and to endorse the decisions of Islamic Revolutionary courts against labour activists and the general public.

Esmail Abdi is currently serving his unjust six year prison term in ward 8 of Evin prison. His most recent furlough request has been denied.

Esmail Abdi’s crime was to defend the interests of teachers in Iran, to demand free and accessible public education for millions of children and adolescents of working people along with hundreds of other prosecuted teachers such as Mahmoud Beheshti Langroodi, Rasoul Bodaghi, Ali Akbar Baghani, Alireza Hashemi, Abolreza Ghanbari and the late Farzad Kamangar who was executed on May 9, 210.

Esmail Abdi is a determined teacher who signifies the alliance of workers and teachers and their mutual desire to create a decent life for all. The rejection of his appeal for retrial is taking place while the Iranian regime has been acting increasingly hostile against millions of workers across the country, including at Hapko, Haft Tape, bus workers, oil and petroleum, steel, automobile and mine, etc.

Labour activists such as Esmail Abdi are incarcerated and workers who protest and demand for their unpaid wages get whipped by security forces while employers who have not paid their employees for months are free.

We are calling on all labour unions and teachers’ and progressive organizations internationally to continue to pressure the Iranian regime for the freedom of Esmail Abdi and other incarcerated labour activists in Ian.
